5 Tips for Writing a Compelling Digital Resume

With employers getting smarter, your resume should not just be about impressing the hiring manager. You resume should be such that a computer can also read it. This is the electronic part of the hiring process. Now, keeping this in mind, follow the 5 tips given below to write your digital resume.

  1. Be Precise and Emphasize the Main Points – The points that you mention in your resume should be precise and to the point. You must make your point concisely. Prepare an attractive and interesting layout but don’t go nuts.  I’ve seen some “creative” resumes that were just too creative. Also ensure that your resume is grammatically correct and error free. In short, proofread it before you send it. Best practice on this is to have someone you know read it.
  2. Choose Keywords – Since your resume is going to electronically screened before the hiring manager or a human resource person sees it, it should have the choicest keywords. It is quite possible that the electronic screening means that the company has done away with the hiring manager.

So, choose keywords that the prospective employer is likely to look for. You can understand the type of keywords you need by reading the advertisement carefully and going through the company profile. Some good keywords will include your past positions, your skills and software that you know.

  1. Don’t Stuff Your Resume With Keywords – Now that you have chosen the keywords, you need to include them in the resume. Weave them in the body of the resume without stuffing them. A good way to include keyword is to use them in the bulleted sub-heading. Or, you can use them in the qualification description, or description of your skills and others.

You can also include a separate section for keywords listing your terms in block.

  1. Set The Resume In Various Formats – Your resume should be set in different formats like PDF, Microsoft Word and others. You should have a separate format that you can e-mail separately. It is essential to ensure that the format is correct or the automated system will delete your resume. Check the advertisement for the preferred format.
  2. Customize Resume – Each type of job has different requirements and thus, you should customize your resume accordingly. Don’t prepare a general resume because it is not likely to be noticed. A generic resume will be targeted much more quickly than a general one. Add or delete keywords according to the nature of the job and the type of advertisement. Also, add, delete, or highlight your qualifications, skills and others.

These are a few tips that you must follow when you are writing a digital resume. You can build your own CV online here. The main thing to remember is that there should be no stuffing of keywords. Secondly, don’t pad your resume with qualifications and skills that you do not have. Many aspiring job applicants make this mistake only to regret later.

To learn about keywords, you can check trade journals, annual reports of the targeted company or industry websites. You will know the popular terms used in the industry or field.

Interviewing is a Two-Way Street

So many of us focus so intently on preparing to answer interview questions that we often neglect to prepare a strong set of questions for the interviewer.  This is a major mistake.  To simply not ask any questions during an interview is unforgivable and fortunately most candidates do not commit this job-search sin.  But, how many candidates take the time and energy to prepare in advance a strong set of questions to ask the interviewer?  As a candidate, it is your obligation to interview the interviewer by asking appropriate questions.  We sometimes forget that interviewing is a two-way street.  You need to determine if this hiring manager and company are a good fit for you.

You want to learn as much as you can about the company, the position and the hiring manager.  You do this by asking open-ended questions.  You cannot elicit the information you need to learn by asking closed-ended, yes or no questions.  I have attached a list of twenty interview questions that I rely upon for interviews (click the enclosed link). Questions to ask the Interviewer.  I have broken them into three distinct categories:  1) Company-specific questions, 2) Position-specific questions, and 3) Manager-specific questions.  I have asked each of these questions during interviews many times, but NEVER during the same interview.  You want to be very careful that you do not overwhelm the interviewer, as you do not want to appear to be conducting a more thorough interview than the interviewer.  Let’s face it…no one really likes an inquisition.  I suggest that you pick 5 – 10 questions that suit your preference and which you would ultimately like answered.  I would encourage you to select a healthy mix of all three categories.

By asking thoughtful and inquisitive questions, you will demonstrate both your seriousness and preparation.  The information you gain from these questions could very well determine whether or not you want to work for the hiring manager and ultimately the company.  In this regard, this information is invaluable.  For example, I simply cannot bear to work for someone who is a micro-manager.  To make this determination, I simply ask the hiring manager to describe his or her management style.  I also want to know if the company fosters work-life balance.  Therefore, I ask the interviewer to describe company’s culture.  I feel that it is imperative that candidates know what they are potentially getting themselves into; which can be determined simply by asking what the most immediate challenges of the position are that need to be addressed in the first three months of hire.  If you are as curious as I am to know about the merit system for bonus incentives, then you want to ask about the reward system for top performance.  I’ll bet you are interested to know what the company’s future might look like; which is why you would want to ask where the company is going in the next 3 – 5 years.

To determine the timeframe of the hiring process and ultimately next steps, you need to ask.  This is VERY important information.  If you are looking for an opportunity to overcome unspoken concerns or objections by the interviewer, then the interview is the best time to ask.  You will not get a second chance to address objections, which could simply be a misunderstanding or disconnect by the interviewer.  Don’t leave anything to chance…ASK!

What are some of your go-to interview questions?

Election Correction

Here we are again at the end of another summer. Kids are getting ready to head back to school as you change your alarms to accommodate to the new cycle.  I myself look forward to the change because in the business world, things start to get busy once again.  Vacations are over and people are planning for the new year.

This year is going to be different from years past due to the Presidential election that we are about to encounter.  If you thought it was hot then, just wait for the next few months.  I believe that this election is going to be most important election America has ever had.

America has never been this divided over anything like it currently is and all by design. You might be asking, “Jeff what does this have to do with a job advice?”  Well, I will tell you.  Whenever you hurt the job provider, you hurt the job consumer.  The provider will figure out how to protect and provide for themselves just like they did when they decided to start their own business. These people are indeed different and understand their capabilities.  On the other hand, job consumers understand that if they perform a task, they then get paid.  If there is not enough money to go around, then the job provider will perform the task that they once paid for someone to do for them.  Let’s face it: there is only so much that can go around.  When you have unaccountable politicians that are trying to get votes from the people they pay, the system will break.  America is divided in half by the “haves” and the “have nots”.  No offense by the terms that I am using, but let’s face it: if you are receiving money or assistance from the government then you are receiving that money from the “haves”.  You then are indeed a “have not”.  This policy works until you run out of the “haves” money.  The government does not have its own money.  They simply are trying to divide us by saying the “haves” do not pay their fair share. Well we already know that 50% pays nothing into the system and in fact they collect from the system.  Well how does that collect if the “haves” don’t pay their fair share?  Very confusing!      I do know that some people think that there is a money tree somewhere that they just pick the dollars from.

Now back to the job advice.  If this Idiot gets elected again, the next 4 years are going to be a nightmare for the “have nots”.  Without a doubt, jobs are going to be far scarcer than they have been.  Companies will hold back on growth and will go into hibernation mode until the bellies of the “have nots” meet their spines.  We can all hope that this election will bring about a correction and if not we’ll have 4 more years of developing more “have nots” !

Jobs Jobs and more Jobs!

JTL Services, Inc. has been getting hammered with new jobs so far this year.  If you or someone you know is looking for a new position, I will list a link to our job page.  I’m not sure what people are thinking about what 2012 is going to be like but I figured that it would be a good year for new hires based on the upcoming election.

Let’s face it, if this year turns out like the last 3 years in the private sector, there will be a new sheriff in town.  If this year turns out to be a good one, let’s HOPE that people don’t forget how bad the past few years have been.  Bad policy decisions are bad policy decisions.  As an owner of a search firm, I don’t need to ask anyone if the hiring situation is good or bad.  I KNOW!  I can tell you that the past 3 years have been the slowest I have seen in the past 15.  I hope that this time people vote for real CHANGE and not pocket change!

I heard a great analogy the other day that really sums up socialistic policies.  Ask a student if he/she would donate 1/3 of their GPA to a student that needs a higher one.   Now, think of that for a second.  Will the donation really help that person out in life?  Hell no!  It didn’t make them smarter.  It might help them out temporarily to get into a better school but can they do the work to succeed?   This scenario reflects that of the 50% of the American people who don’t pay taxes: They expect monetary handouts from those of us who do pay taxes. It doesn’t help them out long term, and in fact, it kills their self esteem.   Teach a man to fish…

As you can tell, I am someone who believes in freedom and less government intrusion.  These guys, regardless to which party they belong to, are nothing more than politicians!  I’m an honorable, respectable person who pays his fair share and believe me, the last thing I need is more dependents!  You know what I mean if your kids are out of the house.   You’ve worked hard to put them through school and then you wake up and have to double down for 4 more years of hope and change.  ¡Aye carumba! What a nightmare!

Now let’s do some good and help those help themselves by getting a job and a job in the government is NOT a job!

We need:  Division Managers, HSE Managers, Lean Mangers, Manufacturing Engineers, NPI Project Engineers, Project Engineers, Quality Engineers, Turbine Component Repair Engineers, Value Stream Mangers, Product Managers, QA Testers, UI/UX Architects, Web Developers, Web Architects, Engineering Technicians, and Technicians just to name a few.
